Market stall, round 4: taking over another agent's program

Files (all under /home/user/aixle/.claude/worktrees/agent-a473bcbddb9d1cd61/dogfood/): market.aix (the rewrite, 177 lines), market_reimport.aix, renders/round-4_market.png, round-4_market_focus_lantern.png, round-4_market_focus_apples.png, round-4_market_beauty.png, round-4_market_reimport.png; exports in out/market/ (model.glb 6.7 MB, model.stl 10.9 MB). 13 renders of the model.

Housekeeping note for the caller: the worktree was a stale checkout (no dogfood/round-3, no STL export, older docs). I copied src/, docs/, tools/, tests/, examples/, .vitepress/, CLAUDE.md, README.md, dogfood/round-3/, dogfood/README.md and the round-* renders from /home/user/aixle into the worktree by file copy (no git operations on the shared checkout). Those show up as modifications in git status; my own work is only the three untracked items above.

1. Reading the inherited program

Clear from the code alone: the overall layout comment (front is +z, half-metre units); the four posts and two beams; the counter as three boxes; the awning painted flat then tilted with rotate(x=9.5) (the +z edge drops, so the front is lower); the valance as a box minus 21 cylinders; apples by two grids, oranges by a 14-coordinate place, the sign and chalkboard, the bag loop, the lantern parts. Names were mostly good.

What I had to guess or render to know:

  • crate(): a shelled box minus a full-height inner box moved up h/2. I read it as leaving a sealed void under the floor; the report said "Cavities none"; a focus render on apple_crate (render 2) settled it: the cutter and the shell void share a footprint and overlap in y, so the void opens upward. Correct, but a two-step formulation of a one-step idea (solid box minus one inner box), and it cost a render to trust.
  • apple: (sphere + (stem | paint("brown"))) | paint(apple_m) — the outer paint repaints the stem red. steps.png confirmed red stems. Almost certainly not intended.
  • Line 72–73 lemons: a two-line expression mixing |, +, array and & with no parentheses; I could not tell what the & box was for (clip the top row to the crate?). Only check's new warning made it certain it removed the row.
  • The magic 2.06 repeated in crate_y, chalkboard and bags is "counter top 2.08 minus a 0.02 sink" — never named; 0.02 is under a cell, so the sink did nothing for the mesh.
  • The gap between the canvas front edge (z ≤ 2.771) and the valance (z ≥ 2.8): joined only because the cell is 0.068. Not visible in the code.
  • The loose 0.137 piece: the report said 'lantern', 'posts'; by volume it is the whole lantern, hanging from a chain (r 0.035) thinner than the cell.
  • set azimuth/elevation/lighting at the top with no comment about what they were tuned for; a 13-line material block with inconsistent naming (cobble, plank, canvas, but apple_m, flame_m); a step named ground shadowing the ground() builtin; a cutter named scallop after the thing it makes; sign_face, priced, handle_c, lx/lz.

Previous report vs. what I found: accurate on the facts I could check (the silent &, the loose lantern piece, coincident faces as the source of the edges, the canvas shredding under --quick --beauty, --focus slices — now fixed, the focus slices do cut through the object). It did not mention the red stems, the sub-cell 0.02 sinks, or the canvas/valance gap. Its "do not know what the 0.137 piece is" is answered above.

2. Print-ready as one object

Changed scene of eleven objects to show market, one union. Structure: the slab at y 0..0.3; the stall built with its own floor at y = 0 and lifted by slab_t in the last step; a named sink = 0.08 (more than a cell) for every resting part (posts into the slab, crates/chalkboard/bags into the counter, barrel into the slab, fruit into the beds).

What did it: the counter is now a solid plank body under the oak top (the top's 24-unit² underside, the largest supportable overhang, is gone; the counter back is closed); chains r 0.06 (lantern and sign) so nothing hangs by a sub-cell tube; posts sunk into the slab. The remaining 14% is the awning's underside (12.6 × 5.2, the design), the valance scallops, the lower halves of the fruit and the hanging sign and lantern undersides — nothing more the design allows without removing the awning. Lantern: rather than solid glass I made it an open brass cage (the drum's four windows cut by two crossing boxes), with the candle standing on the cage floor and the flame on the candle: no enclosed void, the candle is visible in every render, and the flame's glow shows. The old closed shell glass drum with a candle inside is gone; the "glass" material is no longer used.

The remaining 23 edges: spheres piled in the hollows of four others are point contacts (the top apples were at exactly 2r = √(0.21²+0.21²+0.3²) from the ones below), and sinking them deeper seals the pocket between four lower spheres and the floor into a cavity (I got four 0.004 cavities that way; a union(k=0.06) blend made it worse: four cavities plus two specks). The fix that held: each crate has a bed of the fruit's shadow colour up to just above the low layer's equator, low-layer spacing overlaps by more than a cell (0.36 for r 0.21–0.22), and upper fruit sit only in grooves between two neighbours. 209 → 37 → 23; the last 23 are grazing contacts between top fruit and the two below, which a 0.068 cell cannot resolve. Not visible, and a slicer will close them.

3. Improvements (and why)

  1. Brown apple stems (apple = (sphere | paint(apple_m)) + stem): the inherited order repainted the stems red; a material bug.
  2. The lantern as an open brass cage with a visible candle and flame: in the round-3 renders the lantern was a grey blob (the 0.06 wall under a cell) and the candle was invisible inside a closed drum. Now the focus sheet and focused beauty show four windows, the candle and a glowing flame (renders/round-4_market_focus_lantern.png).
  3. A barrel on the bare cobbles at the front right (a revolved bulged profile in oak with three iron hoops): the slab's front-right quarter was empty and the composition fell off to the right.
  4. Fruit that shows: crates lowered from 0.7 to 0.55 so the fruit clears the rim (in round 3 the lemons' top at 2.81 sat under a 2.76 rim and the front view showed empty crates), the piles rebuilt on shaded beds so they read as full crates, upper fruit in grooves.
  5. Beauty composition and light: set zoom 1.5 (the round-3 stall filled about half the frame), elevation 18 to see into the crates, key light at azimuth −35 / elevation 38 with ambient 2.2 so the counter under the awning is lit without going flat; beams 0.2 square instead of 0.14 (7 cm for a 6 m span looked like wire).
  6. Legibility: every height derives from counter_top_y, front_z, back_z, sink, slab_t; materials all *_m; crate_at(x), post(h), bed(x, top, m) defs; a layout comment that says where y = 0 is and why.

4. Friction with the tool and the docs

  • apples = union(apples_low, apples_high, k=0.06) (market.aix, an intermediate version) — expected (per the guide's "union(..., k=) for organic joins" and "no point contacts") to remove the tangency edges; the report instead gained Cavities: volume 0.005 at (−2.102, 2.488, 1.198) ×4 and 2 tiny specks, while the lemons still had 69 edges. The blend fills the seams between spheres and seals the pockets under them. Worked around with beds and groove seating (above). The docs do not say that a blend can create enclosed voids in a pile.
  • Every attribution in the one-model report says in 'market': Watertight … 24 at (−4.185, 2.734, 0.976) in 'market', Pieces … in 'market', specks in 'market'. With scene the same rows said 'apples', 'apple_crate'. Once everything is one union the step attribution collapses to the final step, so locating a problem means converting coordinates by hand (and remembering the 0.3 slab lift). I expected the innermost named step.
  • --quick (render 3): warning: The model is 4 separate pieces … volume 0.531 at (0, 5.297, 1.035) — the 0.1 canvas shredded into bars at the 0.212 quick cell, exactly the round-3 complaint about --quick --beauty, now also as a false pieces warning. The quick report should say the loose pieces are thinner than the quick cell rather than report them as pieces.
  • Thin warnings fire above one cell: 'stem' (line 90) is only 0.08 units thin, 1.176 of the 0.068 cell and 'cage_drum' … 0.08 thick, 1.176 of the cell, but letters at 0.1 (1.47 cells) did not. The docs say "thinner than a grid cell". The threshold (about 1.2–1.5 cells?) is undocumented, so I thickened by trial: 0.05 → 0.08 → 0.1 for the cage wall.
  • apples_high = apple | move(-4.41, apple_y + 0.3, 0.79) | grid(2, 2, 0.42, 0.42) — expected a resting contact; got 187 non-manifold edges. Nothing in the docs says two spheres must overlap by a cell in distance, not just in bounds; the guide's "overlap by a grid cell (a peg 0.05 into its hole)" reads as a translation rule. Worked out the sphere geometry by hand.
  • lantern_ring = torus(0.12, 0.05) | move(0, 1.04, 0) sitting on cone(0.34, 0.12, 0.2) whose top is at 1.04: the torus bottom at 0.99 grazes the cone's top disc → 4 at (4.996, 3.997, 2.353). The same tangency class; sank it to 1.0. The report gives coordinates but not which two surfaces, so each cluster is a coordinate hunt.
  • Round-3 line 73's & bug: the new warning is good ('&' removed everything … '|' binds tighter than '&', so check the parentheses), but it names the line, and the expression started on line 72; the report's step table lists lemons at line 72. Minor, but a two-line statement gets two different line numbers depending on which message you read.
  • check prints grid 200: cell 0.07 units while every render says cell 0.068; the thin warnings quote 0.068. Rounding, but "0.07" and "0.068" for the same number side by side made me re-read.
  • The re-import report warns loudly (The model is 9 separate pieces …) about what is a sampling artefact of a 0.1 sheet at a 0.142 import cell; import()'s doc says a fine mesh "wants resolution=160 or so" but not that thin sheets below the import cell break into slats. Not worked around (the previous agent measured that resolution 200 does not fix it either).
  • --focus apples: the sheet's title says CELL 0.00812 and 520340 TRIS for a 1.62-unit box — a focus render re-extracts at a cell nine times finer than the model's, at whatever cost. Fine here (a few seconds), but nothing says how the focus cell is chosen.
  • Nothing wrong, but a surprise: the physics Base footprint is a hull of "points within 0.102 of y = 0", so with the whole slab on the ground the stands check is trivially true. For a single printable piece that is what I wanted, but the check cannot tell a stall that stands from a slab that stands.

5. Re-import comparison

What survives: the slab (this time), posts, beams, counter, the three crates with fruit as domes, the sign board, chalkboard, bags, the barrel with hoops, the lantern as a lumpy silhouette. What is lost: the canvas sheet becomes six loose slats along its stripes (the 0.1 sheet against a 0.142 import cell), the sign's lettering and the chalk decal (a decal is a skin, so expected), the sign chains and lantern handle become lumps, every material (import reads positions only, as documented). The size row now matches the picture, unlike the round-3 report.

6. Three changes that would make an inherited program easier to read and change

  1. Report locations by innermost step, in the model's own frame, with both surfaces named. 24 edges at (−4.185, 2.734, 0.976) in 'market' is useless in a one-model program; 'apples_high' meets 'apples_low' at … (the tool has both fields) would have saved four renders here, and would let a reader of someone else's file find the part without decoding coordinates.
  2. A contact rule in the docs and in check: "two parts that only touch (tangent spheres, a torus on a disc, a box on a box) need to overlap by about a cell in distance, and a k blend between packed parts can seal a void". Better still, check could name pairs of steps whose boxes touch without overlapping, and the report could say which two steps close each cavity. The whole fruit pile struggle was this one rule, undocumented.
  3. Make step names carry into the report and sheets the way a reader needs: a # section comment or a group keyword that the steps sheet and report use as headings, and a warning when a step name shadows a builtin (ground = …) or when a paint on a union repaints an already-painted child (the red stems: the tool already warns about painted + unpainted unions; painted + painted then repainted is the silent one). The inherited file's biggest reading cost was structure the language has no place for except comments.
